Ramesh has over 17 years of experience in global capital markets – research and investment banking. Prior to joining Moody’s Analytics Knowledge Services, Ramesh worked with the offshore research and analytics units of Crisil and iGate, managing sell-side research and investment banking teams for global clients. He started his career as an investment banker at Ind Global Financial Trust (currently part of Ernst & Young’s corporate finance practice in India), advising companies on M&A and capital raising. He holds an MBA and a bachelor’s degree in Technology.

Creating on-the-ground equity research capabilities in China

On June 21, 2017, MSCI announced it would include 222 mainland China-listed stocks (A shares) to its flagship emerging markets index. This move is expected to increase demand for China stocks, as an estimated $1.6tn of funds that track this index increase allocation to China. This, coupled with the Stock Connect program (that allows international investors to directly invest in Shanghai- and Shenzhen- listed stocks) is likely to spur demand for mainland China-listed stocks.

According to the IMF, China’s nominal GDP was more than USD10trillion in 2014 (second-highest in the world) and its GDP-PPP surpassed that of the US. The phenomenal growth in the country’s economy over the past couple of decades, however, was out of bounds for many global investors, who were not allowed to invest directly in the companies listed in Mainland China without a special license.
